Also in some Volvos, suggesting a Ford heritage. FFRRs have a similar system without the problems so more of a D3 issue than LR issue, saying that haven't had any problems with mine for years once I found dealers that knew what they were doing. Have same type EPB on my 5 series and haven't seen a single issue with them on BM forums.

Just had my first screamer the other day when we had all that constant rain, then it seemed to be ok for a couple of days, but today it screamed and locked on with the yellow fault light on dash. Wouldn't move forward or back until i switched engine off and restarted. On restart all seems reset but now i daren't use the epb.
What would you sugest is first action to take? Could it just be that the pads are getting low and need replacing or adjusting or is it more likely to be more serious? our local backstreet "LR specialist" seems to be more familiar with older landrovers than the modern disco's so i don't know whether to bother going there or not. Is it likely a regular mechanic would be familiar with epb problems? I pretty much refuse to go anywhere near the main stealers, my cars not under warranty so budget is the main issue!

Fact , the EPB module from Germany is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE, it's inferior seen a few the shaft of the clutch gears break off.
A STUPID DESIGN X FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUCH A PITY SOMETHING LIKE THIS GET SOURCED BY A BRAND OF VEHICLES KNOWN FOR THEIR LONGEVITY, that is the Achilles heel of a superb vehicle
Thank you AndrewW for your dissection, they all suffer from that which you describe.
Definitely not fit for purpose

MY EPB screamed and locked on my 2005 D3 after 3 months.
Bought a 2009 D3 2 weeks ago, same thing has happened.
Dealer has diagnosed actuator failure both times.
There has been a fantastic investigation by a member on this site (AndrewW?) who designed a metal part to replace the plastic part which fails. I'm going to ask for my old actuator back, dissect it and see if it's the same problem. Chris

Despite having made a maintenance, my EPB failed 2 weeks ago. I have changed by a new one (spent more that 900€ ) and I remain the old one. I have dissambled it and everything seems fine, I also dismount gearbox and poor plastic pieces seems fine.
Now I need to check with voltage and see it is every works fine.

Have been getting intermittent squeaks when applying my EPB, then every now and then I'll get the long screaming noise and errors flash up, but after turning the engine off and leaving it a few minutes it's working fine again
Can't believe I'm saying this but when my Freelander's diff and VCU are sorted i may start using that as my daily drive again

Picked up the car, ('07 SE manual with 76k on the clock), just under a week ago and is going back in to the supplying garage tomorrow, as, you guessed it, there is a screeching from the brakes... lets see what they say.

I've had the d4 for a month now and the screaming has started
Did the usual Turn Off. Lock. Wait. Restart - sequence yesterday and it went away.
But tonight the reset sequence has had no effect with a constant Red dash warning and constant alarms sounding while the vehicle is in motion.
Drove the car back home (1mile) with the alarm bells ringing, and when I got there the rear near side wheel was red hot (not literally though)
Again gone through the reset sequence but no joy - as soon as the car goes more than 3 mph the alarms start and the red dash light is on.
The car moves freely however and doesn't feel like the brakes are binding.
What's the latest on warranty fixes for these EPB issue? Are dealers fixing under warranty (my extended warranty runs out in Nov2013) or are we left picking up the tab
Not happy 2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us
2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed
2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara)
2016 D4 about to depart
2022 DS nearly...........

Just bought a 2005 auto, have some squealing and the red warning light on the dash that flashes. Have managed to get it to turn off by turning off and restarting the car a few times or just putting into gear, but it's pretty disconcerting as I worry it will leave my wife stuck somewhere... Took it to my local indy but he couldn't replicate the fault, not really sure of next steps, I'm not mechanically minded myself.
