Thanks for the offer Dave, I'm not going to get chance to drop my tank until Thursday next week which should give me chance on Sunday to get the fuel level down then work for a few days.
I've ordered some Tiger seal hoping that will solve the problem, then to sort the mice out!

Having done a lot of reading of the forum I'm getting more and more confused about how to remove the tank protector and lower the tank. I was initially under the impression that the protector was removed separately from the tank, can anyone provide me good instructions what I need to do?
Cheers

While I can empathise with all of those who have suffered with the rodents dining on their tank top vent elbows, as I suffer the same fate on a Hyundai Terrican I had some 4 years ago, I'm just glad the 4.4 v8 doesn't have this part. Having said that I found traces of rodents in the air filter and gnawed foam protective covering on a pipe in the engine bay, so they aren't just partial to the tank vent.

Hi all
I'm attempting to solve my leak issue, bit stuck.
Currently have the D3 jacked up and stood on axle stands on the offside, I've removed the heat shield as expected the two bolts rusted through the shield. I've disconnected the handbrake release cable and the pipe below it. I know I need to remove the filler connection.
Is there any other pipework that needs to be disconnected? I am then planning on undoing the bolts holding the tank, is it possible to just loosen the front two and remove the others so I can lower the tank?
I'm only planning on lowering enough to inspect and repair the damage if that possible.
A speedy response would be really appreciated.

Once unbolted and free of the stuff around it the tank can be lowered about 20cm or so before you risk damaging all the connections that are accessed and released from the top.

Cheers Robbie
I'm now having trouble getting the bolts off holding the tank and protector in place, mainly seem to just be spinning in place. After 9 years I guess they don't want to come off!
Lunch break I think then attack it again!

Thanks to all who provided advice, on dropping the fuel tank the mice seem to have attacked mine too.
Created a fix initially with a mix of plastic steel, then covered with Tiger Seal and a small piece of copper pipe which was then all covered in more Tiger Seal. Its not pretty but I'm hoping to never see it again!

Glad we could help. How did you remove the difficult bolts?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Robbie, turned out only one was an issue with the securing clip having snapped in the chassis was able to hold it tight wedged with a screwdriver to then get the bolt off.
I know the D3 is now virtually 9 years old but I cannot imagine not having it!

We can add my car to the list of D3's with identical mouse damage. Hopefully Land Rover have taken take note of what has been reported on here and other forums and give it some thought for future variants

Wel my fix seems to have cured the leaking, everything seemed to be working afterwards.
Filled the tank yesterday again brimming it, no signs of leaking. Might be paranoid but now done 60 miles the gauge is still reading full with no signs of dropping and the MPG seems to be increasing.
Should I be worried that the guage is faulty?
Anyone else experienced this after a tank repair?

When brimmed I get about 50 miles before it stops indicating full, so whilst it is a little more than I would expect it is not completely ridiculous.
You can probe the fuel level sensors via the wiring in the wheel arch - the actual conversion of resistance to indicated fuel level is done at the instrument cluster where it is turned into CAN message. If you want or feel the need to do this I could get you some resistance values.

Don't laugh but my breather pipe was also eaten by a rodent, so I promptly bought a second hand D3 tank on ebay only to find the replacement tank had also been munched on! D3 XS BAS Upgrade; GAPIIDbt; 4x4 screen enabled, sump guard, tree sliders, BFG tyres, TP front bumper, winch, off road ready
D2 TD5 Overlander spec sold!
D2 V8 lpg - long gone
Series 2a much missed
Another one eaten... This time in Sweden. Don´t know the nationality of the mouse though
Got some really good help from a fellow LR owner. Fixed it in a serious way with 3/8 parts. Cost = a few £.

Well I think the little bxxxxxxxs have had another go at my tank. Filled up (not brimmed, just click off) and left a puddle on someone's driveway. But it's still dripping after doing 150 miles. This was a new tank in 2009. Still got 3/4 tank and it appears to drip while driving. The last time the diesel was pumped out at speed all over the workshop floor. How long does it take to pump out via the schraeder valve to empty the tank?
