We have had the ESF warning coming on for over a year now. One EGR valve replaced, which didn't solve problem. Certainly not nice when pulling a caravan when it decides to knock the power off. It always seems to be at the top of a hill when changing gear.
Anyway yesterday the thing decided to cut power and not give any warning. Took to a garage near to where we were on holiday and they said the other EGR was stuck at 30% and the turbo waste gate was stuck or something. Anyway they blanked off the valve and freed the turbo actuator pivots. Driving back to our site seemed okay, didn't dare thrash it, but towing the van this morning the power really went! No warning and I was lucky to get 10mph out of her. Did a roadside reboot and it was back to normal, until another hill and the ESF warning came up again.
Will try the MAP sensor clean and see what happens, don't want to fork out too much as she's going in Sept.

Hate to say it but it looks like you've joined CFT! Freeing up the pivot doesn't work as you've seen, it needs a new turbo.
Try cleaning the MAP sensor, it may help. No harm trying the simple things first.

How much would a turbo cost? We have tried to look after our Disco, she's only got 29,000 on the clock....blinking thing that's the thanks we get. Should've thrashed the filly from new.

Thrashing it wouldn't have made any difference, the turbo could still have failed, it's what they do! SWMBO's old D3 had been entheusiastically driven by it's first owner and it packed up 3 weeks out of warranty. It's not the turbo itself that fails, it's the VVT servo linkage below.

PS my 1st replacement turbo was £2,300, 2nd £1,700. Must gave got a frequent flyer bonus!

Just done 60 miles driven quite enthusiastically. Only one ESF but the weird thing is, there was little loss of power. Since cleaning the MAP there has been a lot more thrust so to speak. Also I've heard the turbo kick in for the first time in ages.

Mine when back in again on Wednesday and got it back yesterday.
They think they have solved the problem - apparently they have changed the MAP sensor.
I will be pleasantly surprised if it has cured it - but I doubt it.
I checked the fault codes when I got home and along with the P2290, P0098 I now have P0107.
The last one wasn't there earlier in the week - and non of them will clear with my BAS box.
They did actually take the car for a test drive - which didn't throw up the fault - but then it only happens under certain circumstances, so no surprise there!Mark.

Got the dreaded ESF on Wednesday - couldn't rev over 2k rpm without power being cut. Took the D3 to my indie, who says likely to be fuel pump. Waiting to hear final solution and costs.

Hhhhmmmm more and more folk getting this engine system fault message, i know it could relate to many things but there was a recall on later models regarding the high pressure fuel pump, wonder if this is going to go the same way as the brake recall

I also get ESF message but only infrequently when towing the tin tent up long hills in 4th or 5th. I pull in turn off and the fault goes. Mine has blanked EGR, fast road intercooler and a clean sensor. It has happened a total of three times, it is an irritation rather than a problem. I will let it develop but will hope it's not the turbo.
